I feel like I should be doing something with my hands nearly all the time, even in class. If I have something in my hands, I can pay better attention to the teacher.
If I do not have something to do with my hands, I start to day dream and look around the room. I loose track of what the teacher is saying. I'm not sure why it works this way. I just know I can remember to pay attention if I am bending a pipe cleaner into a little figure.
I usually have a pipe cleaner, play dough (or similar clay), a Lego mini figure or some type of very small toy. Some people draw or "doodle" on their paper. It may look like the person is bored. But sometimes they are just trying to not get too distracted from the lesson.
The problem is that sometimes the thing you are using to keep you from getting distracted starts to distract you. Every now and then I start thinking about the play dough in my hands too much and forget to listen to the teacher.
It is not a perfect system. But it is working ok for me right now.
