Mom: It's been said that people with Aspergers are maybe more truthful than most people. Would you say that you are a truthful person?
Christie: Yeah.
Mom: Have you ever told a lie?
Christie: Sure, but I don't really have a reason to lie about anything. Plus, it makes me feel bad.
Once, when I was five, there were a bunch of cookies in the kitchen and I ate one. I asked you if I could have another one and you said "No". But I took five and went up to my room and ate them all really fast. Then I felt so terrible, like I had committed a huge sin.
It haunted me for years. I was pretty sure I was going to go to jail. Like cookie jail. Every time I heard a police siren, I'd get really sweaty. Actually it wasn't really lying--it was more like theft. I finally confessed when I was 10 and you were like, "No big deal!" and I was like, "But where's my punishment??"
Mom: Er, OK.
Christie: Yeah. Honestly, the thing I lie about most is when John or Claire ask me if there's any chocolate in the house and I say "No" but I actually have all the chocolate in my room. But even then, I feel a little bit guilty and end up leaving some on the counter for them.
Mom: I think they're on to you. So you're a pretty bad liar?
Christie: I think so, I guess. It's just not one of my talents.
Mom: Sometimes I think you are guilty of something because of your body language and expressions.
Christie: Oh. I act like I'm guilty even if I'm not because you make me nervous when you're telling me I look guilty. Because if I'm telling you the truth and you don't believe me, I don't know how to act. It's uncomfortable. And then I look even more guilty.
Mom: You really do.
Christie: Anyways, I don't really think it's a person's appearance that makes them look guilty. It has more to do with the circumstance or what they say.
Such as, if Daddy came home with a bunch of groceries and I rummaged through them and asked if there was any chocolate and somebody said "Noooo"... there's probably chocolate.
Mom: Are you a trusting person? Do you assume people are telling you the truth?
Christie: I think so. I don't really think anyone has any reason to lie to me.
Mom: I'm pretty sure those cookies had chocolate chips in them.
Max ALWAYS looks guilty. If I ask him if he did something he smiles and says no. We call it being Guilty McGuilterson.
